では無くあのラスカルズのヴォーカルの方。ぐるーヴぃん。解散２年後についに立ち上がり青い目ソウル・ファンの注目の中、組んだのがトッド・ラングレン氏。そしてカーメン・ムーアと申すブラックさん。カーメン氏はジャズ畑の人らしく全ての曲作りに関わり音楽監督と弦の編曲を担当なさってます。しかーし。

何でまた組むことになったか。そりゃベアズビルと契約したからだよ。と言ってしまえば身もフタもありゃせんけどよう、東海岸ソウルを具現化求めるにこれほど相応しき人材は無し。願ったりかなったりでは無かったでしょうか。

ダリル・ホール＆ジョン・ホールの方では無くて、私の大好きなオーリアンズの超絶ギタリスト、ホールさん。
ちょうど２ｎｄを出したばっかの頃。この頃はまだ拠点がウッドストックだったのと、やはり白ソウルを求めるにこれほどうってつけの人材は無し。よくぞ集ったこの二人。
トッド氏とホール氏、多分この顔合わせが初、そして唯一のものだと思います。その点でも興味満点。けっこう趣味があってそうなんだけど、これが微妙且つ巨大な違いがあるようにも。
トッドさんのこの時期は自身のアルバムでは「未来から来たトッド」、ユートピアも活動開始して正にノリに乗ってる頃、プロデューサーとしてもグランド・ファンクで大当たり、さーぶいぶい言わすぞのハナかな。しかしまだ後年のプロデュース作のように力技で全部自分って程では無く、微妙な時期か。先のホール＆オーツ「ウォー・ベイビーズ」プロデュースの時期ともかぶる。同様にユートピアのロジャー・パウエル氏参戦。
さて、この盤の魅力は、まず、キャバリエ氏の歌であることはもちろん、あのグルーヴィン・ヴォーカル全開、曲作りもよほどカーメンさんとうまが合ったのか、実に気持ち良さそうに、素敵曲を続々と。聴かば必ずしや何曲かは思い出に残る曲が出てくるかと。
その上でサウンド。これが不思議だよう。２０８６年の新橋駅前屋台ラーメン
みたいな。タイム・スリップしてこのメンツがそのまま未来で録音したみたいな奇妙な感覚満載です。その元凶はパウエル氏のあのまんまユートピア・シンセにあるか。に加えてトッドちゃんの中にある白トッド、黒トッドが同時に活躍しちゃったつうか。どかんと全部出したいんだけど、相手はちょっと先輩、業界では大先輩のフェリックス氏、尊敬しまくりでさすがに遠慮もあるし、どうしよう。中途半端だ。それで中途半端で煮えきらずつまらんとなるかと思えば、さにあらずそこが魅力で面白いってのがまた音楽の摩訶不思議なとこ。ジョン・ホール氏のギターはどうか。１１曲中５曲に参加、弾きまくって大活躍。はいいけどこれがどっか窮屈そう。多分トッドさんとノリが違うんだと思う。ソウルはあるけどファンクでは無いトッド氏は前ノリの人、片やホール氏はソウルでそしてファンキーだからアトノリ。水と油ぶりも相当だ。ラストのサイケ・ロックって言ってもいい「アイム・フリー」では何で俺が弾くの、お前が弾きゃあいいじゃんとも言わんばかりの狂乱ギターで、こんなん姿聴くの初めて。温厚な人そうだけどケンカしたかな。もう一人、ギターの人が。エリオット・ランドール氏
。スティーリー・ダンでのプレイでお馴染み（？）、あの「リーリン・イン・ジ・イヤーズ」でばりばり弾いてる方です。特徴有るんで一発でわかるかと。この人もまた微妙に噛み合って無かったりして(^0^)。言ってみりゃあダンとトッドさんだから。な中で貫禄たっぷり、ひるまずは主役フェリックス氏。ヒットはまるでせず。
複雑で微妙連続な魅力が原因だ。最初の全日本プロレスｖｓ新日本プロレスの交流戦みたいかも。
７９年馬場・猪木ｖｓシン・ブッチャー組。
そりゃ最高に面白い。
