*永遠の胸キュン少年、ギルバート・オサリバンの７１年１ｓｔアルバムです。そりゃもうこれから出て来る至玉のメロディがまだ頭の中にぎっしり詰まった状態。人間玉手箱でございます。書く曲書く曲いいのが出来るんで本人も楽しくってしょうが無かったんじゃないかな。才気がほとばしって眩しいほど。音楽の精が宿った時の人間の尋常ならざる様子、狂気を感じる一枚です。迫力もそりゃ並じゃなし。ここまで至るまでかなり苦労してますギルバート君。キャリアの最初は６７年にスインドン（ＸＴＣ！）アート・スクールの最高学年だった頃、自分の曲のテープをとある業界人に送ったところから始まったと聞きます。何とそれは開封されずに送り返されて来たつうことで。私も経験有り(^0^)。それでクソと思い立ったが百年目、一路ロンドンに向かってレコード会社行脚。ＣＢＳのオーディションに合格。「ＹＯＵ」とゆう曲を出したけどまるで売れず。でぐだぐだに。次はメイジャー・マイナー・レコードつうところと縁が出来たけどここも何だかなかなかレコードを出してくれない。ようやっと２曲録音したもののいらん音を勝手にかぶせられて台無しに。キャリアの最初につまづいた音楽屋に業界はとことん冷たいす。その会社も辞めたギルバート君、万事休すと思われましたが捨てる神ありゃ救う神あり。音楽プロデューサーのトニー・ホール氏とゆう方と知り合います。トニー氏、この少年を救うには大立者のバックアップが必要だと感じてゴードン・ミルズ氏に紹介。このゴードン氏、あのトム・ジョーンズ大王をスタアに育て上げたとんでもない業界大物。トム・ジョーンズ？ギルバート君の個性には月と油かと思いきや才のある人はやっぱ違う。彼の個性をズバっと見抜いて自分の自宅に居候させて曲をどんどん作らせ変なしがらみの無い自ら作った新レーベル「ＭＡＭ」の第一号歌手として登場させたとゆう次第です。その代わり印税も貰えず給料つう給料も無くゴードンさんがくれるお小遣いだけでほそぼそ、居候宅でひたすら曲作って歌うつう音楽タコ部屋状態だったらしいすが。それでも一番やりたいのは音楽、しかも認められて理想的な環境で出来るんだからきっと幸せだったかと。ゴードン氏が見抜いた彼の個性は見かけとは逆にトム・ジョーンズ親分と共通してたかもしれませぬ。肉体＆粗野を隠す事無く全開にしたトムさん、片やありのまま流行にも今一乗り切れない普通の少年。怒涛のように流れた６０’ｓだったけどかなりの割合でそれについていけない人もあるってことで。彼自身もやりたかったことは３０年代の無声映画、チャプリン、キートンの世界だったとゆうから息はぴったしでした。で、その世界をやりたいと言っても実際にその時代の音楽を研究して応用してやらなかったのが彼の偉いとこかも。不器用だったからかもしれずまたマネ出来るほど音楽の才が無かったからかもしれず、また面倒くさかった（そりゃ無いか）かもしれず、あくまでも自分の受けた感動だけを受け取ってあとは自分の音楽で返答した。無理せず培われた彼のそんな音楽は英国の根っこにある音楽ショーの伝統を持って、何かとポール・マッカトニー氏と比べられるのもそんな空気が共通してるからかもしれません。丁寧なごあいさつから始まるこのアルバム、シングルで有名なのは７．のナッシング・ライムドだけ。それでも曲の質と来たら全極上。アルバムの方も長期セールスしたって聴けば充分納得してしまいます。シングル曲で聴けるあのオサリバン節ももちろんたっぷり８．からのＢ面ではお、こんなこともって驚く冒険もあったりして。最後は買ってくれて本当にありがとうとこれまた丁寧なごあいさつ。仕掛けたのではなく自然とアメリカのシンガー・ソングライター・ムーブメントに対してのイギリスの返答となったこのアルバム、７１年つうとんでも無く昔のリリースだけど瞬間の時を切り取った新鮮さは時代を超えて古くなることはけっしてありません。ギルバートさんのこの時代はこの時だけだったのだから。誰にもまねできないし本人も再現は出来ませぬ。
