*１９７２年に結成、ハワイの美しい海岸の通称からバンド名、付けられたとゆうカラパナの７５年の１ｓｔアルバムです。当時「サーフ・ロック」つう呼称で忽然と現れて一世を風靡いたしました。昨日やらせていただいたビバップ・デラックスみたいに言ってみれば聴きにくい孤高な音楽も難攻不落ですけど、逆にここまで耳触りが良くてしかもブーム付となりますと逆に入りにくかったりして。実際、当時は私、ワイハにもサーフィンにもまるっきし縁が無い若者でしたんで（あ、今もか）何だこの軟弱野郎とか言ってツェッペリンを聴く。イーグルスみたいにアウトローでも無かったし。先週手に入れまして３０年後の今、勝手に邪険にしてすまなかったようと聴き惚れています。ハワイと申しますと、えー正月の芸能人、おみやげマカデミア・ナッツ、ハワイアン・バンド、ライ・クーダー博士の鳥肌アルバム、スラックキイ・ギター、ワイルド・サモアンズ、プリンス・トンガ、キング・カメハメハなどとゆうイメージが点のように浮かんでしかし線でちいとも結ばれず。名前だけは熱海並みに親しみやすい存在なんだけど、面白いとこなのかワイハ。しかも泳げないつう身なのでますますわからん。わからんが音楽ならわかるぞ。演奏、歌がもう滅茶苦茶上手いっす。すらすらすらーっと８部所の力で難無く進みの。このデビュー前に相当のライブこなしての満を持してのものだったことは否応無しに実感でき。観光客相手のレストランとかで演奏しつくたのでしょうか。そうゆうところでオリジナルで客を喜ばせるってえらい難儀なことだったかと。好きだからってアヴァンギャルドなんてやることは夢にも思わなかったろうなあ。音楽やって喰う為にはまず喜んで貰ってそれから自分達のやりたいことをって生活感が溢れているところがまずたまらなく魅力的です。客は恐ろしくお洒落な外観のこれ聴いてバカーンス気分、リッチな人はバンドマンなんて屁とも意識せず、一生に一度の海外旅行かもつう人には好奇の目で見られの中での音楽人生詰まってて。まあこれも勝手なこっちの思い込みかもしれませぬが。そのどっかださい垢抜けなさがたまらぬ音楽の愛情で今となってようやく染みる。音楽は「サーフ・ロック」つうのに、ウエストコースト入っておらん気がしたりしてびっくり。ドゥービーさんのファンキイなとこはありだけど。直系の先祖はあの大好きなオーツ＆ホールのアバンダンド・ランチョネットじゃないかと思いました。その中の「ホエン・ザ・モーニング・カムズ」がまんまカバーされてます。東海岸のフィリー・ソウルの翻訳音楽とのシンパシー。ホワイティに対する複雑な感情、かといってブラックでは無いって気持ちの帰結がそこだったのでしょうか。地理的にははるか遠く、しかも気候も多分大違いの音楽が結びついてしかも南国音楽にもう聴こえるなんて。マジック。で、ハワイ＝サーフィンのイメージだけで「サーフ・ロック」か。それで通っちゃったのもマジックだな。などと思いながら、やっぱどっか常磐ハワイアン・センターなとこに強く惹かれて今日も聴く。夢のように素敵曲「ナチュラリー」、いやもう全部。こうなったらセシリオ＆カポノさんにも出会わないかな。夏はもう終わっちゃうけど。誰もいなくなった砂浜を眺めるっていいすね。
